How the Roof Edge, Drip Edge, Fascia & Gutters Work Together
The roofline isn't just a gutter screwed to a board. It's a system: shingles overhang the roof edge, a metal drip edge flashing directs water into the gutter, the fascia board is what the gutter attaches to, and the soffit underneath vents air into the attic. When every part is installed correctly, water flows off the roof, into the gutter, and away from the house.
When any part fails, water finds its way behind the gutter, into the fascia, and eventually into the roof deck and the wall below. That's why a gutter problem and a roof problem can look the same from the ground — and why we inspect the whole roofline, not just the gutter.

Why is my fascia board rotting?
Fascia rot is almost always a water issue — water is getting behind the gutter or running down the roof edge and soaking the wood instead of draining away. Common causes are gutters that overflow, gutters that are pitched wrong, missing or damaged drip edge flashing, or a roof leak above the fascia. Replacing the board without fixing the water source means the rot comes back.
Can bad gutters cause fascia damage?
Yes — it's one of the most common causes. Gutters that overflow, leak at seams, or pull away let water run directly down the fascia board. Over time that water soaks the wood, paint fails, and rot sets in. Fixing the gutters is usually step one; replacing the damaged fascia is step two.
Why are my gutters pulling away from the house?
Usually because the fasteners have failed — either the spikes or hidden hangers have pulled loose, or the fascia board behind them has rotted and can't hold a fastener anymore. Sometimes the gutter is simply overloaded with debris or water. We inspect the gutter, the fascia, and the fasteners and fix the actual cause.
Should fascia be replaced when gutters are replaced?
Not always, but often. If the fascia is soft, rotted, or water-damaged, installing new gutters over it is a mistake — the fasteners won't hold and the rot will continue behind the new gutter. We inspect the fascia before installing new gutters and replace any damaged sections first so the new system lasts.
What causes soffit to rot?
Soffit rot is usually water from above — a roof leak at the eave, water running behind the gutter, or damaged flashing. Poor attic ventilation can also trap moisture against the soffit from the inside. We find the source of the water before replacing the soffit.
Can a roof leak cause soffit or fascia damage?
Yes. A leak at the roof edge — often from damaged flashing, ice damming, or a failing shingle strip — can run down into the soffit and fascia and rot them from the inside out. If you're seeing damage at the roofline, a roof inspection is a good idea before the exterior repairs are made.
Do I need a roofer for fascia repair?
Fascia sits at the intersection of the roof and the exterior, so a roofer is usually the right trade for the job. A handyman can replace a board, but a roofer can tell whether the rot is caused by a roof problem above it — and fix the source so the repair lasts. Can damaged gutters cause roof problems?
Yes. Gutters that overflow or leak behind the fascia can soak the roof deck, rot the fascia, and let water back up under the shingles at the eave. Over time that can turn a small gutter problem into a roof leak. We inspect the roof edge when we inspect gutters.
Should I repair or replace my gutters?
It depends on the condition and age of the system. A few loose fasteners or a seam leak can be repaired. Widespread rust, sagging, overflow, or a system that's undersized for the roof usually means replacement. We inspect and tell you honestly which makes more sense.
What are signs that water is getting behind my gutters?
Water stains or rot on the fascia board behind the gutter, peeling paint on the fascia, water running down the exterior wall during rain, and in severe cases, water stains on the interior wall below the eave. The usual fix is reinstalling the gutter with proper drip edge flashing and sealing behind the gutter.
What's a drip edge and why does it matter for my gutters?
Drip edge is the metal flashing that runs along the roof edge, tucked under the shingles and over the back of the gutter. Its job is to direct water off the roof edge and into the gutter — not behind it. When drip edge is missing, damaged, or installed wrong, water curls back under the shingles and runs down the fascia board instead of into the gutter. That's one of the most common causes of fascia rot, and it's a roofing issue, not a gutter issue. We check the drip edge whenever we inspect a gutter or fascia problem.
How do I know if my gutter problem is actually a roof problem?
If your gutters are working fine — no overflow, no sagging, no leaks at seams — but the fascia or soffit is still rotting, the water is likely coming from above. Signs include rot concentrated in one area under a roof valley or penetration, water stains that appear on the soffit but not behind the gutter, or damage that keeps coming back after the gutters were repaired. In those cases, the source is usually a roof leak at the edge, damaged flashing, or a failing shingle strip. A roof inspection finds it before you pay for exterior repairs that won't last.
Do you install new gutters, or only repair existing ones?
Both. We repair existing gutters when the problem is fixable — loose fasteners, seam leaks, sagging sections, downspout issues — and we install new gutters when the existing system is failing or undersized. If your gutters are rusted through, constantly overflowing, pulling away because the fascia is rotted, or undersized for your roof, replacement is usually the better investment. We inspect first and tell you honestly which makes sense for your home.
Can you fix gutters that overflow or drain poorly?
Often, yes — but it depends on why it's happening. If the gutter is pitched wrong, we can repitch it so water flows toward the downspout instead of pooling and overflowing. If the gutter is undersized for the roof area it's draining, overflow may mean replacement with a properly sized system. If downspouts are clogged or poorly placed, we repair or relocate them. We figure out the actual cause before recommending a fix — overflowing gutters aren't always a cleaning issue.
Do you repair or replace downspouts?
Both. We repair downspouts that are loose, leaking at joints, or disconnected, and we replace downspouts that are crushed, rusted, or undersized. We also make sure downspouts direct water away from the foundation — extending or repositioning them when they're dumping water too close to the house. Downspout drainage is part of the gutter system, so we inspect it whenever we inspect gutters.
